Music Piracy

I want some feedback about music being downloaded for free. personally I believe free music is the number one way to get your music out there. if your just starting out it would be ideal to have a ep for free on myspace or a site where people can download it. what do you think? should all music be free or just some or even none?

    I like bands that put out free music. I usually try to spread them around my group of friends if they are any good.

    it depends. i'm not against piracy, but if you really like an artist you should give them some money too, see em live if you wont buy the albums.

    I think that fame and publicity are more lucrative than any penny-per-song royalties that legit cd sales generate for great artists. They love to be invited as guests on TV, especially if they're playing on a high-rating timeslot, because the more advertisers pay for a show, the more an artist will get paid for being there.

    i think piracy is more often used by people who don't have alot of money for the cd's they want. once they get a job and a little more money etc, i can see them buying more cd's that they like. i know i'm in the process of replacing my collection with legit stuff. mainly cause i want to start DJing though, and i need the copywrite on the songs i play

    It helps the artist get exposure so they can do tours where they actually make money.

    @morg yeah make sure you got a mechanical license though so you don't get screwed over. If your playing in a location like a club they should cover the blanket license and performance license fee for you but if you play for a private show you could probably get away with all of the copyright stuff.

    i pay for artists i like, if its a very good album. if they seem like a one hit wonder then i tend to lean towards piracy.

    I like to support artists/bands/producers every now and then but when you have a huge collection of music it's so expensive.

    It goes both ways.. when an artist is starting out it is good in order to get the name out about their work. However, when they become famous I believe they should get the money they deserve.
